I really enjoyed reading at Su Casa and having the opportunity to interact with the children. I think their summer education program is vital for community and student success. I had been to Su Casa as a undergrad student so I had a little bit of familiarity. I appreciate the community/rec center feel, and that the door is always open. It is my impression that besides the classes and services Su Casa offers, their greatest asset is providing a safe place for the community to gather, discuss learn etc. It has become the 'hub' and welcoming center for latinos in the Cincinnati area.
I would be curious to know if Su Casa is able to qualify for grants etc. outside of Catholic Charities that might be able to support some of the programming and meet more needs that Su Casa has.
You are so right, Beth; having access to a good summer program can make a huge difference in a child's success in school. Wasn't it fun to read with them? I appreciate how you identified the "feel" of the place as a community or rec. center. It is not as "formal" as the Healing Center, but it is clear that they provide a vital and necessary service.
