Vacaciones Útiles - Su Casa
The summer school program is so important - and an amazing service to offer to parents. I know that my Spanish students lose a lot of language over the summer - and I am sure that ELLs face the same challenge. I had worked with a program in Hilliard that tried to meet the same needs - but only saw students for two week intervals. How amazing to be able to provide this service for students (AND parents) over the summer. My second graders did not want to be read to - they insisted on reading to me! Of course they also didn't believe that I could read to them in Spanish - but that's neither here nor there. I wonder how many summer school programs are provided during the summer and what can be done to increase that number.

The second graders I read to were the same. They wanted to read to me. (And they did an awesome job of doing so in Spanish and English.) We had a great time discussing the stories and predicting what they thought would happen next.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the program you worked with in Hilliard? (That's where I live now). I agree that it is vitally important for students to get involved in something to practice their English both formally and informally over the summer. The younger you can get the kids involved in this the better. I was also tremendously impressed by the fact that our first grade group spoke English to each other even when it was not particularly formally requested.
