Guest Speaker: Jacqueline Rioja Velarde
I find myself leaving this particular session with two major takeaways. Certainly the statistical information is enlightening. I'm also intrigued by the idea of cultural identity as a self-defined social construct. Consider, for instance, the individual who is personally offended when the identity they have selected for themselves is not acknowledged by others, or perhaps is referenced in error. I wonder, to what extent do we as individuals have a responsibility to clearly communicate to those around us the list of personal characteristics we choose to adopt as our own? How loudly do we have to identify ourselves as individuals before our indignation at real or perceived slights has any legitimacy?
