I was very impressed by Ms Rioja Verlarde ability to interact with some of the sensitive topics with ease and profesionalism. The story of her life was every informational and eye-opening and above all inspirational to me. Her presentaion evoked topics which many could relate to as seen in the discussion. I gained another perspective of identity issues in general, self-identity in particular and the cultural challenges that the Hispanic/Latino community faces as they migrate into the US. Her presentation also helped clarified so many of the stereotypes amongst the the male and female Hispanics which gave me a clear understanding of why the women are more industrous, ambitous and strive for post secondary education degrees as well better jobs.

  1. I was very happy that she chose to share so much of her own story with us. It definitely helped with the presentation and was very inspirational. I also liked how she broke down her own layers of identity. It made me think of how I would break down my own identity or how I can incorporate the idea into my classes to help my students with understanding their own and others.
