Immigration law

Our lively discussion of "undocumented" vs. "illegal" was a great warm-up for Sherry Neal's presentation on immigration law.  There are many in the US who rant about illegal or undocumented people, unprotected borders, etc.  and no doubt there are problems with the system.  Sherry's explanation of the alphabet soup of visas and the process for getting a green card shed light on the cause of the problem: it's very complicated and difficult for the average person to follow the process correctly.  Why isn't the expected departure date stamped into the passport instead of requiring people to navigate a computer system to get the information?  With only four paths to a green card, it is no wonder that many try to bypass the system.

  1. I agree with a lot of what Maureen has said. Before today's lecture, I had no concept of how complicated and difficult it was to become a US citizen. I've known people who have gone through the process, but after today, I realize that the ease with which they passed through the system was more luck than the norm. Pessimistically, I fear that the new immigration act will only place bandaids over larger issues, but I am extremely interested to hear how everything progresses.
