Immigration Policies
One of the main reasons this institute interested me was that I wanted to better understand Latinos in general, Latinos in Ohio, and immigration. I have to admit I didn't know exactly how immigration currently works. Sherry Neal did a great job starting from the ground up explaining how the US got to where we are now on the immigration issues and what the current proposed bill will change. This made me clearly understand the issue from both sides with facts and the necessary details. I was surprised by the 3 and 10 year bars and it makes more sense why people wouldn't want to leave to come back lawfully. I was also shocked to find out that the options for receiving a green card are so limited which makes it much harder for people to "just enter the legal way." It was a great discussion and I learned a lot about immigration policy that I will be able to bring to my classroom.
