J. Rioja Velarde

Today’s guest speaker, Jaccqueline Rioja Velarde, offered insight about Latinas in Ohio that was very intriguing and interesting. I liked how she shared her personal experiences to help bring a better understanding of cultural identity. Her personal experiences helped to bring a better understanding of what it is like to experience cultural identity both mentally and physically.

Although I wasn’t surprised about the challenges of overcoming adversity and achieving success, I was surprised to learn about the enormous growth of post-secondary education for Latina women over the past 10 years. Additionally, it was intriguing to learn there was a drastic increase in the number of Latinas making over $50,000 per year. I found it very motivating of how the paradigm has shifted from a higher level of education to being just a dream to it becoming a reality.
