Latinas en Ohio
I learned a lot through today's speaker that really gave me a new, much needed perspective into who Latinas really are. I found it really interesting that Latinas are becoming a very significant percentage of the United States. I now have a better understanding of the difference between Hispanic and Latino (and even American.) What surprised me most from Jacqueline's presentation was her comment about feeling claustrophobic after coming from from the large city of Lima, Peru to a small, rural area like Oxford, Ohio. One would think the opposite would or could only be true and that only if you move from wide open spaces to a big, crowded city you could feel claustrophobic. This really made me step back and think how different people's world views really are and how that influences them in many aspects throughout their lives.

I agree that it is interesting how geography plays a part in our feelings of security and identity. This sense of discomfort seems to have the ability to increase a person's feelings of isolation. No wonder Latino people who are used to an urban lifestyle struggle to get their needs met in a place like Southwestern Ohio.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the feeling of moving from an urban setting to somewhat rural area to be substantial. This would be a cultural shift for most Latinas.
