Latinas in Ohio

A few points from Jacqueline Rioja Velarde's presentation on La Mujer Latina:

  • As a native of Peru, Sra. Rioja confirmed that she self-identifies as "americana."  This confirms what I tell my students, that anyone from the America's is American, and that we from the US do not have sole claim to the title.
  • Sra. Rioja also confirmed that "Latino" refers to all people from Latin America, thus including Brazilians and Haitians.  I need to be careful when I use the term and am referring to just Spanish speakers.  Many Spanish speakers find "Hispanic" non-inclusive or too reminiscent of the colonial era.
  • Even though Latinas make up a small portion of the population in Ohio, I was impressed with the amount of resources available, and especially impressed by how many women within the community have stepped forward to be of support to others.

  1. I don't think that in Springfield Ohio we have many resources available for the Hispanic community. Many families suffer with the lack of translators and Spanish speaking staff at numerous offices and school systems in the area. I agree with your point of Latinas stepping up to help others as we are family oriented and loyal to our friends.
