Sherry Neal, Immigration policy expert and attorney, was our second guest speaker. She was very knowledgeable about the complex process known as immigration and naturalization. Most of her presentation focused on the proposed, comprehensive, bi-partisan Immigration bill now on Capitol Hill. The bill is called Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Bill. The title itself is one of trying to get as many people (and politicians) under the Immigration reform tent as possible. Border Security placates the conservatives, Economic Opportunity has an amnesty component that most liberals favor, and Modernization reform just sounds good politically. Sherry also enlightened the class on the Dream Act executive order signed by President Obama last year. Though not a law, this executive order provided undocumented residents, brought to the US before age 16, the opportunity to apply for citizenship if they graduate from high school and apply to college or serve in the military. Class discussion and Q and A's shed light on the difficult and cumbersome naturalization process in the United States and the unintended and intended consequences of immigration reform.
